Ashley is the weekday water safety instructor for our pool in West Torrance. She is CPR and WSI certified and is able to adapt to her swim pupils by drawing on 7 years of experience giving lessons. Her goal oriented and fun approach is a favorite among those who work with her.

She has been giving swim lessons to all ages and abilities since 2005. She began teaching both group and private lessons at the Palos Verdes Beach and Athletic Club for and was there for two years. In 2007 she volunteered to be a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor for the Camp Adventure program through her university and was placed in Rota, Spain to work with children of all ages. She continued to gain more experience teaching water safety and swim instruction at various summer camps.

Ashley was born and raised in Hermosa Beach and received her BA and California state teaching credential from Cal State University Chico in 2009 and 2011. She currently spends the school year at an International school in Cairo, Egypt and will be embarking on her third school year abroad in the 2013-2014 school year.

" I teach one on one in the privacy of our Torrance pool. I teach all ages and all skill levels with great success and excellent references. If you are fearful of the water I can help you overcome this barrier to having fun and relaxing in the water!

Three words that would describe my approach to teaching water safety are gentle, personal, and fun.
  • Gentle: For anyone and especially for toddlers fearfull of the water it takes a great deal of courage to go for it and learn to become water safe. I respect that courage and encourage it with a gentle approach, always striving to find the right balance between pushing a pupil to challenege their fears and respecting their instinctual fear of the water. I find that with the right mix of encouragement, *belief* in the pupil, and other techniques I've honed over the years amazing results can be achieved on the road to total water safety.
  • Personal: Each swim student I work with is different from the next. Some have no fear of the water and we just focus on propulsion and floating and other techniques. Others are petrified of even putting their noses in the water. Whatever the case may be I will adapt my style to achieve the goal of water safety in the shortest amount of time by adapting to the student's personality, current fears, and current skill set, all with the final goal of getting them to be water safe on their own.
  • FUN!: I strive to omake lessons as fun as possible for many reasons. First, it is difficult to be having fun and be scared at the same time. Usually one emotion will push out the other; when a student is having fun with the lessons and laughing it is the best antidote to fear I've found yet in my many years of givng lessons. Additionally students wil be much more apt to want to continue lessons and to have a better attitude if lessons are fun for them. If they view the lessons simply as work to achieve a goal it is much more likely that emotional burnout and self sabatoge wil result.
    Certifications:
  • WSI
  • CPR and First aid for infants, children, and adults
  • Lifeguard
